This scholarship awards $5,000 to an Asian-American and Pacific Islander graduate student pursuing journalism as a career. The selected student will also receive a travel and lodging stipend of $1,000 and complimentary registration to attend Asian American Journalist Association’s annual convention and a mentor for the convention.

The controversial ideas that Chennault developed and advocated while in the US Army Air Corps. His system proposed that pursuit planes could intercept bombers, given an adequate warning net, emerging communication technology, and proper training. Others, including many of those higher up in the command chain of the Air Corp, believed bombers to be invulnerable and argued that pursuit planes and fighter-based strategies, and by extension Chennault, were outdated.
Reproduction of a newly discovered manuscript from Claire Lee Chennault’s work with the Chinese Air Force, written before he trained and led the Flying Tigers and the 14th Air Force of World War II. The manual details the author’s expectations for Primary flight instructors. In addition to flying techniques, Chennault provides instructors with ways to evaluate the potential of the prospective fighter pilots. The manual, which includes pencilled-in edits and hand-drawn illustrations, illuminates the qualities and thinking that made Chennault a legendary aviator and leader.
